Firebrand Recording

Studio Intern

January - May 2023 • Maryland Heights, MO

What I liked

Brian Scheffer, the Studio Engineer at Firebrand, is the real deal. In all aspects of studio work (Software, Hardware, and Instruments) he is supremely knowledgeable. Moreover, he is an excellent teacher and was open to making almost any moment a learning experience. Also the studio dog, Roscoe, AKA Big Ross, AKA Broggy Boi, was a delight to be around. 10/10

What I wish was different

Not much, bit of a drive out there, but well worth it.

Advice

Ask questions, look for ways to make yourself useful, and know what the role of an intern is and what attitudes you should adopt.

What I liked

I enjoyed the hands-on experience of working in this cozy studio environment. Firebrand's plethora of equipment and unique set of clients make every studio session a one-of-a-kind learning experience. I especially enjoyed working with the head engineer, Brian Scheffer, who was a plethora of experience to learn from and has pushed me to learn more as an audio engineer.

What I wish was different

The only issue is that studio sessions don't have a consistent schedule, so making sessions with a busy class schedule can be hard, but I implore you to make it to as many of them as you can because they are great to learn from!

Advice

Ask lots of questions! Brian is always able to answer questions big or small and loves talking about concepts in audio. His experience as a teacher means he's able to explain dense concepts easily, so that anyone can understand them, regardless of their level of experience.

What I liked

I loved the experiences I gained from Firebrand like meeting and watching many musicians record!

What I wish was different

I wish that I could have had time to be there even more!

Advice

Be very prepared for anything and everything will run more smoothly.

What I liked

I liked a number of things about interning at Firebrand Recording. The first thing I noticed when I started interning was Brian's openness to new ideas and willingness to stop what he's doing to explain a concept or talk about gear. He was also very open to letting me use the studio for engineering my own projects and genuinely excited to help me learn about recording, equipment maintenance and running a small business in any way he could.

What I wish was different

I wish I had used the opportunity to engineer more of my own projects, but the semester I chose to do my internship was particularly busy for me and the clients I had in mind. While I engineered the lead vocal recordings for one album here, I wish I had taken the time to record more drums and other more complicated instruments.

Advice

Bring some projects to work on yourself! Brian uses the studio every day until the evening, unless there is a session booked. The studio is often available during the evenings, so ask Brian if you could possibly use it for your own projects.
