Summer Program Intern

What I liked

I loved getting to meet other students in my field! Living with a bunch of English majors who wanted to work in the non-profit really solidified my goals for the future. I realized that I was right in what I wanted to do as a career. We all still keep in contact, too. Besides that, I loved seeing all the poets and artists that came through, and getting to interact with these creative rockstars in a more relaxed environment. After my internship ended, I was offered a year-round position with their online program too!

What I wish was different

Advice

Save some money before you come to Provincetown. The internship is unpaid, housing is $750 for the summer, and groceries are expensive. The Work Center provided some opportunities to make money throughout the summer (housekeeping, gallery sitting, fundraisers, modeling), but it's nice to have some back-up cash. On that note, look for a part-time job a couple weeks after you get there. You'll know the schedule by then, and there'll be plenty of positions open. People will hire you if they know you're interning with FAWC.

Development Intern

What I liked

I loved being a part of an arts organization where work was being produced, writing was being shared, and speakers were coming in each week that I was there. It was a great community to be inspired in as an artist / writer as well as gaining work experience in the development side of an arts non-profit. All of the interns became very close and I consider them all close friends and we continue to share work with each other.

What I wish was different

I wish the internship was paid, even slightly, the extra events we worked were but that didn't make up for the 25 hours a week of unpaid work. I believe paid internships are necessary when the work the intern is doing is integral to the success of the organization and especially if and when the organization does have the means to do so.

Advice

It is a great idea to move somewhere for an internship at some point in college, if you have the time and means to of course. Also, if there is a way to find a part-time job to do in addition to the internship (if you aren't also in school) for extra money, that definitely helps you learn the area a bit more and save some money (as we all know that most internships don't allow us to save money, if make any in the first place).
