Family Futures

Non-Profit Administration Intern

May - August 2019 • Grand Rapids, MI

What I liked

The staff did a great job of trying to make the internship a good experience for the interns and afford us as many learning opportunities as they could, all while still making sure our work was still positively contributing to the mission of the organization. They were very accommodating to us and our schedules, realizing that we were students and had other jobs.

What I wish was different

I would have loved to work there full time if they were able to offer pay.

Advice

You get out of the internship what you put into it.

Volunteer Services Intern

August - December 2018 • Grand Rapids, MI

What I liked

Opportunity to work with social workers and other professionals in the nonprofit world.

What I wish was different

I wish I had more independent projects.

Advice

Advocate for your own project at internships where it is plausible and really pursue what interests you there: be it fund development, sustainability, or inclusion of marginalized groups (especially trans people and BIPOC).

Volunteer services intern

May - September 2017 • Grand Rapids, MI

What I liked

So many opportunities to develop! Between all the free offerings they provided and the ones they allowed/encouraged, I gained 3 new certifications!

What I wish was different

There was a lot of office drama within the company. Management often disagreed and argued.

Advice

You are appreciated even if it doesn’t feel like it.
