I loved being able to have fun with the kids I was in charge of. I would consider this job, one of my favorites, as my kids and I were given the freedom to explore the Portland area, and make memories together.

Always keep in mind that this is their childhood, and because you have already had yours, you should work hard and be flexible in order to give them a wonderful childhood.

I love working closely with children, and helping expand their worldview through new and exciting experiences.

What I wish was different

It's often challenging to find a family that is a good fit. This family was going through a divorce during the time that I worked with them, so the children acted out frequently. Obviously nothing could have been changed, but if the children had had a stable home environment I think I would have enjoyed working with them more.

Advice

Don't write off the job as a waste even if it's not everything you might have hoped. I may not seem like it, you make a difference to the children you work with.

It was a monday-friday job working 4-5 hours, plus date nights on the weekends. I like being able to look forward to my job, and it taught me a lot of responsibility.

If you're looking to babysit or become a nanny, search on care.com! Communication with the family is very important especially depending on the age of the children! Writing down what they ate, how long their naps were, and how often you changed diapers was very helpful for the family.
