Dynetics

Engineer Trainee Year 1

May - July 2020 • Huntsville, AL

What I liked

I enjoyed the work I did with Dynetics at their headquarters in Huntsville, Alabama this Summer. I worked closely with the members of my team to design a web application using C#, JavaScript, HTML, and the Vue.js framework. My team and I followed the Scrum agile development framework in order to make timely and effective progress on our project. We also made use of Jira and Git in order to track and manage changes made to our software. I greatly enjoyed the opportunity to work on a large project while both practicing the lessons I had acquired in the classroom and picking up new skills through hands-on development.

What I wish was different

Due to regulations in light of COVID-19, my internship was largely remote. Had circumstances been different, I would have loved to work on-site with my team and in my office. Even though I worked remotely from the nearby UAB campus, I still enjoyed the work I did with Dynetics and with my team. They were understanding and accommodating despite the circumstances, and we were able to stay in regular, daily contact throughout the internship.

Advice

My advice from this experience is to support your team in any way you can. Every member of my team during my internship was incredibly supportive and helpful, which was especially appreciated in the circumstances during which my internship took place For as much as your teammates support you, even more so you should do everything in your ability to assist them, such as when they encounter obstacles or are adjusting to a new project. My work with Dynetics really impressed upon me the importance of a strong team, so anyone looking to participate in an internship should look to be a member of their team who is dependable and dedicated to creating a conducive environment for teamwork.

Project Management Intern

May 2018 • Colorado Springs, CO

What I liked

Dynetics is an engineering and manufacturing company centered around developing interns into long-term employees with applicable skills. In this position I felt valued as a team member instead of feeling like an intern.

What I wish was different

I wish the Colorado Springs office had closer ties to the headquarters so that I could have gotten a more similar internship experience to the interns at headquarters. The communication was lacking from time to time.

Advice

Applying concepts from classes I have taken and marketing myself as a professional were both critical in facilitating my success at this position.

Engineer Trainee II

May 2018 • Huntsville, AL

What I liked

I learned a lot and the opportunity to explore many different aspects of the company over the summer. Plus, there were many intern events to show us Huntsville and get involved in the city.

What I wish was different

The fact that aside from intern events, I didn't really get to see any other interns, due to the nature of my project.

Advice

It's going to be challenging in more ways than just topics and projects you've never seen before, but it's worth it. The company wants to see you succeed.
