Manufacturing Engineer Project Co-op

May 2023 • Bismarck, ND

What I liked

I started working for Bobcat Company in May of 2023 as a Manufacturing Engineer Project Co-op and have had a great experience thus far. I've had the pleasure of working on the NPD team with great coworkers who trust me to take on tasks or take the lead on some projects while encouraging my work efforts and part-time Mechanical Engineering studies while working full-time. I have learned a lot while working for Bobcat company on how to improve the manufacturing process, design for the manufacturing, and time management on NPD projects.

What I wish was different

This has been my first engineering internship so far so I didn't know what to expect but I have been extremely happy with my experience with Bobcat thus far. Probably the only opportunity I wish at least manufacturing full-time co-ops had was to briefly shadow workers in assembly or weld throughout the factory to get hands-on experience with the machines. There are some opportunities to do so but they're more in a prototype context rather than current production.

Advice

Don't be afraid to take initiative and show your co-workers on your team that they can trust you with tasks and that you will do a good job while getting them done in a timely manner.

Electrical Engineering Co-op

May 2022 • Bismarck, ND

What I liked

At Bobcat, I was treated like a professional. I was given projects that challenged me both on a technical level and on a project management level. My team was very supportive and was always ready to answer my questions. My manager had me work on a few projects that gave me visibility with upper management so I could build a reputation as a strong future candidate.

What I wish was different

My manager was always very up front with me about my job performance, but I would have like the opportunity to have a more formal review.

Advice

Don't run from taking a co-op position just because you might have to take a semester off. The job experience is invaluable.

Supplier Development Engineering Co-op

January 2022 • West Fargo, ND

What I liked

I really liked the real-world experience in some of the behind-the-scenes work that goes into design/planning/engineering/manufacturing. As an engineering major, you don't necessarily think of the sourcing struggles that occur during design and testing, as well as sustaining. The work environment at Bobcat is amazing as well; you can ask anyone for help, and they will either help you or help you find someone who can!

Design Engineer Co Op

January - August 2021 • Johnson Creek, WI

What I liked

I really liked the autonomy: I owned the projects I had, and it helped me grow so much. My self confidence has never been higher because I know what an impact I made and I am going to be able to point at a mower and say, "A, B, and C are because of me". The projects I was put on closer to the end of my co op were things that a full time engineer would have done then if I wasn't there. I wasn't on a bunch of fluff work. Everything I did was super meaningful. People were always willing to answer questions and help out as much as they can. Everyone was nice. I worked with every function and got a much better understanding of what everyone does.

What I wish was different

I wish I would have been able to have a more consistent co op in terms of what work I was assigned. Bobcat would benefit from more diversity. I could tell at times that people weren't used to working with people with different life experiences or views.

Advice

Ask everyone questions, they are trying to help you. Shout out to the engineering technicians would build our R and D products who know and do so much and don't get enough credit. Be vocal about your needs and make sure they are being met. Everyone is super busy, and if you don't remind them, they will forget.

Advice

Don't second guess the idea of taking up an internship or a Co-op. It will end up being the best decision you make during your time at college. The real world experience is second to none the most important thing one can learn.
