Diocese of Sacramento

About Diocese of Sacramento

We, the People of God of the Catholic Diocese of Sacramento, guided by the Holy Spirit, are called by Christ to proclaim the Good News of the Kingdom of God through prayer, praise and sacraments and to witness the Gospel values of love, justice, forgiveness and service to all.

The Diocese of Sacramento formed officially in May 1886, transitioning the See from the Diocese of Grass Valley to the capital city of Sacramento. Grass Valley had served the vast Northern California regions since 1868. Prior to that, the Vatican first identified Marysville as the location for a vicariate apostolic – an interim ecclesiastical jurisdiction for the Northern California church, which had formerly been a part of the Archdiocese of San Francisco.

The Diocese of Sacramento is one of 12 dioceses in California and is in the province of San Francisco. Our community encompasses 102 parishes, 40 missions, three Newman Centers, 36 elementary schools and six high schools. The total population of this area is more than 3.6 million people and the total Catholic population is more than 1 million people.
