The Department of State Hospitals – Atascadero is one of five forensic mental health facilities situated in San Luis Obispo County on the central coast of California. Since its establishment in 1954, DSH-Atascadero has been dedicated to offering mental health services to a population of 1,100 adult males residing in one of the 32 units within the hospital. Patients are typically referred to the facility by Superior Courts, Parole Hearing Board, the Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, and other state hospitals.

Providing vocational training, educational courses such as GED preparation, substance abuse programs, and both group and individual therapy sessions. The clinical team includes psychologists, psychiatrists, rehabilitation therapists, and social workers. The level of patient care is maintained by our dedicated team of physicians, registered nurses, pharmacist, pharmacy technicians, and psychiatric technicians. Additionally, the hospital is supported Registered Dietitians, Dietetic Technicians, Business Analyst and many other professions and supportive staff.
DSH-Atascadero provides educational opportunities for students and interns in various fields, such as Clinical Psychology, Dietetics, Hospital Police Officer Training, Music Therapy, Pharmacy, Psychiatric Technician, Recreational Therapy, Nursing, and Social Work. Additionally, offering a partnership with Cuesta College for the Psychiatric Technician Program on hospital grounds and the Hospital Police Officer Training at Camp San Luis Obispo, located 20 minutes from the hospital.
