Industrial Engineering Intern

September - December 2023 • Dayton, OH

What I liked

The opportunity to gain valuable industry experience and develop transferable skills. As an intern, I was able to apply my engineering education in a real-world setting. This hands-on experience is invaluable. The variety of responsibilities outlined in the job functions. Creating engineering documentation, investigating process improvements, supporting the production floor, and working on cost reductions were great ways to learn. My coursework had prepared me to conduct time studies and technical writing. I was able to use these skills during the internship.

What I wish was different

More details were provided on the specific projects or process improvements interns would be working on. A description of what types of engineering software or tools would be used. This would help me understand if my skills align with their systems and tools as I would have prepared myself in advance.

Taking the initiative and volunteering for extra projects. The day-to-day responsibilities of creating documentation, investigating optimizations, and supporting the production floor will grant great experience, keeping an eye out for ways to take on additional initiatives. Attending cross-functional meetings, building connections with team members in other departments, and making it known when you have availability to help out. My main piece of advice is to take charge of your learning by volunteering for impactful projects. Make the most out of this experience by fully leveraging the unique intern role.
