HVM Amer Sales Intern

June - August 2024 • Santa Clara, CA

What I liked

I thoroughly enjoyed my time interning at DataStax as part of the HVM Amer Sales team. By working closely with experienced sales representatives, I gained hands-on knowledge of the process from start to finish—identifying high-potential clients, generating stable pipelines, and ultimately driving momentum toward securing sales. This experience has equipped me with practical skills in sales operations and lead generation that I am confident will benefit my future career in sales or business development.

What I wish was different

One thing I wish had been different about my internship is that it was mostly remote. While remote work had its benefits, I found the in-person experience at DataStax HQ during the HVM Pipe-Gen event to be the most valuable. Being in the office allowed for better collaboration, quicker feedback, and stronger connections with the team. I believe spending more time in person would have made the experience even more enriching.

Advice

One piece of advice I would give is to make an effort to talk to and connect with everyone, even if their role falls outside the scope of your internship. Every person has a unique story and valuable insights into their career journey, which can offer new perspectives and help shape your own path forward. Don’t limit yourself to just your immediate team—learning from different roles can open doors to ideas and opportunities you may not have considered before.

Software Engineer Intern

June - August 2022 • Myrtle Point, OR

What I liked

- Got to work with up-and-coming technologies - Got a choice of projects to work on - Managers and mentors were super skilled - The top management (C suite) felt very accessible and personal. The interns got an hour call with the CEO at some point, and All-hands meetings were ran in a way that showed people's personalities.

What I wish was different

- My manager/mentor was presenting at a conference shortly into my internship, which is impressive! And he was super bright. But he didn't have a lot of time to get me onboarded at the beginning, so I was unsure of what I should be doing for a greater portion of my 10 weeks than I would have liked - Everyone was distributed, and my team for the project was me and another new hire, combined with two mentors who kind of advised on the side. I would have liked to be incorporated into an existing team, so that there was an existing team dynamic I could plug into. Being the nature of a small, new team working remotely, I didn't have too much personal interaction/friendship with the people I worked with. - Referring a racial/gender minority or vetran was rewarded (at least at the time) with twice the standard referral bonus. Something about that seems off to me.

Advice

Don't be afraid to speak up in the zoom room. They're trying to get you to make friends; you have to talk to do that.

Software Engineer Intern

June 2022 • Santa Clara, CA

What I liked

I was given the opportunity to work on the project and technology, I was interested in. I loved the distributed nature of DataStax. Throughout my internship program, I had constant support from my coach, mentor, and the HR team. It was an awesome experience in terms of learning and collaborating with fellow DataStax members. I am privileged to start my career with DataStax and continue the internship for one more semester.

What I wish was different

Everything during the summer internship program was amazing, could not ask for anything better than what I received.

Advice

One piece of advice I would give is that there are a lot of resources at DataStax, make sure you are clear with your needs, communicate with your coach and team, and use all the resources in your reach to the fullest.
