Dana Incorporated

Mechatronics Engineering Intern

May - August 2022 • Maumee, OH

What I liked

I got to work with lots of great people in my group, and was able to do a total of 3 co-op rotations (Gear Lab once, then Mechatronics twice) without having to interview again. I also learned a lot, like how to read electrical prints, improving a lot at through-hole soldering, building wiring harnesses, designing test fixtures in Siemens NX for 3D printing, and even doing part prints that were sent out for machining. I even got to learn how to drive a forklift, and there's a big online library of training videos available through Skillport on things like electric vehicles. Overall the atmosphere is generally laid-back, the Mechatronics lab has air-conditioning and lunch at the cafeteria is really good for around $4.50.

What I wish was different

It can be a bit rough when new co-ops come in since there's a lot to learn but there may not be much time to teach it. There's also some weeks with a lot of downtime but other weeks that get very busy, so managing your time can be a challenge.

Advice

Take the initiative to learn as much as you can, especially if it's your first co-op. Also I would really recommend Mechatronics specifically out of all of the other groups since you get to learn a lot and do a wide variety of work.

Information Technology Intern

May - August 2018 • Toledo, OH

What I liked

Interning at Dana Incorporated was an excellent experience. One of the ethics Dana really pushes is honesty and integrity. I had so much trust and support at this company, and had very many people personally able to give guidance to not only my day-to-day work but to my career goals in general.

What I wish was different

The internships at Dana are great, but in the Information Technology position I was in, I feel I learned interpersonal, time management, and communication skills more than technical abilities. This however was not entirely bad as I was in need of learning how to function within a corporate environment.

Advice

Be sure to be proactive and define your goals and assignments clearly. This will help your manager see that you are serious, but also guarantees less ambiguity in your work.

Sales Analyst Intern

May - August 2018 • Maumee, OH

What I liked

I liked how big of a company this is, and how many people I had to talk with. If I ever had a question, I had many resources to contact.

What I wish was different

Much of my communication happened over Skype. My boss worked remotely, and rarely came into the office. It was all manageable, but I wish I could have had more face-to-face interaction.

Advice

Always be willing to try something new. This is an established and well-organized company, but it still loves receiving fresh, new ideas. Never be afraid to share your insights and suggestions.
