Cottingham & Butler

Insurance Sales Intern

May - July 2022 • Dubuque, IA

What I liked

The culture and hands on experience that I gained. We really learned a lot of what it is like to be in this position and what it takes to succeed.

What I wish was different

I wish that we had been able to experience what it was like in different locations across the country, but it would be hard to do all of that in just 10 weeks for an intern

Advice

I would say go in with an open mind and willing to learn. Having an internship is a great experience to learn about different fields of work and what it’s like to succeed. Also, I would recommend building your network as large as possible during the internship.

Client Services Intern

May - July 2021 • Dubuque, IA

What I liked

I liked how Cottingham and Butler invested a great amount into the internship program with the hospitality, projects, guest speakers, and networking events it provided. Cottingham and Butler got me out of my comfort zone and I am thankful for that.

What I wish was different

I wish I had the opportunity to do more tasks / projects from the sales role, since I was also intrigued in that role. I also wish we got to pick what department we were in. I was put in transportation, but would have liked to gain experience in the benefits and risk side aspects as well.

Advice

If you want to gain valuable experience in the insurance broker industry and complete projects that are vital to the company, then this is a great internship to be apart of!

IT Intern

May - July 2019 • Dubuque, IA

What I liked

Great company with a fun atmosphere and lots of company activities to partake in.

What I wish was different

This was their first time having software development interns and they did a great job of gauging skill level, but needed to provide more projects off the bat to fill time.

Advice

Come in with a will to learn and try new things.

Client Management Intern

May - July 2019 • Dubuque, IA

What I liked

We were assigned projects at the beginning of the summer that we had full control over, which we presented to the executive board at the end of the summer. I liked that our projects were relevant to the company's work (it wasn't just busy work we were handed) and they were continued to be used even after we left.

What I wish was different

The only thing I struggled with coming into the internship was not knowing much about the insurance industry, but they do a fantastic job of helping you with the learning curve and answering any questions you have.

Advice

Don't be afraid to ask as many questions as possible and immerse yourself into the role. Everything's a learning experience, and soak in as much as you can while you're able to!

Client Management

May - July 2018 • Madison, WI

What I liked

Amazing opportunity to learn about the insurance world. Supportive leadership and mentors. Opportunity to meet and talk with clients.

What I wish was different

More interns in the Madison office. Dubuque was the main place for the internship

Advice

I highly recommend this internship. I had done 2 internships before this one and was absolutely blown away. It was very professional and educational. I didn't think I would like working in insurance but I accepted their offer for a full-time position once my internship was finished.
