CME Associates, Inc.

Construction Materials Testing Technician

May - August 2024 • Albany, NY

What I liked

I really enjoyed the on site experience that I had with CME. It helped me get a full understanding of real world applications of things I had learned in school.

What I wish was different

I wouldn't have changed anything

Advice

One of the biggest things in the construction industry is the ability to adapt to certain situations. I think this thought will help me in my career to realize that not everything will turn out perfect, but if I can find solutions to my problems it'll turn out just fine.

Civil Engineering Technician

May - August 2019 • Rochester, NY

What I liked

Everyone I worked with was extremely kind and caring and just wanted to help me learn and do the best job I could. I enjoyed being outside all summer, I never sat at a desk, not once. It was awesome and exciting and I never saw the same thing twice, everyday was something new. I also liked seeing the progress on all the different construction sites. Sometimes I wouldn't be on the same sight for 3 weeks or so and seeing the advances they made in that short of time was really interesting and cool. The contractors also love to show you around and help you learn new things and they want you to be as excited about their work as you are.

What I wish was different

The only thing that sucked was not being guaranteed hours in terms of weather. Almost ever time it rained our jobs got canceled and because that was my only job I would get sent home. There were a lot of weeks I never even came close to 40 hours. But then again, some summers it rains a lot and other times it doesn't. I wish that they had some intern work to do around the office in case something like this happened.

Advice

This is a very physically demanding job but don't let that scare you. Make sure you are prepared because no day is the same. Always make sure you get enough rest especially when you're scheduled to have a long day. Bring tons of water with you everywhere, no matter what.
