What I liked
I got the chance to shadow a wildlife vet and help with workups exams on 8 cheetahs that were later released, and 3 cubs that had recently been rescued. I also helped care for livestock and livestock guarding dogs. I loved learning so much about the field I am interested in and to see the challenges of veterinary medicine abroad.
What I wish was different
Absolutely nothing, I loved Africa so much and I got the chance to spend 6 days a week 14 hours a day doing such a variety of cool tasks that all relate back to the ultimate goal of cheetah conservation. Although preparing donkey meat to feed the cheetahs was not the most glamorous task.
Advice
Working abroad can seem intimidating but it is so worth it. There will be challenges and adjustments but you learn so much about the world when you see it first-hand. I met an incredible group of passionate people from all over the world, worked with some amazing creatures, had some crazy adventures, and made memories that will stick with me for a lifetime.
