Advice

Nutrition and Food Service Volunteer

What I liked
Taking part in a food demo with participants in the VA Move! program; working with the director on various menu projects and a plate waste study.
The supervisors and staff in the department I worked in are always willing to help. Communication is excellent, if sometimes on-the-fly. The director assigned tasks and gave brief instruction, trusting me to ask questions as necessary. She did not micromanage at all.
What I wish was different
My time here was not regimented; I was assigned tasks based on daily needs which felt somewhat disorganized at times (though informative and more often than not fun!)
Advice
This is a great experience if given clear direction. This unit was understaffed due to some managers being out on maternity or annual leave and about 5 staff members had quit within a short span while I was there for various reasons. The moral: it can be chaotic at times, but I never felt unwelcome despite the pressures of the people with whom I was working.
