Undergraduate Researcher
May - August 2019 • Beaver Island, MI
What I liked
This research internship was exactly what I had been hoping for to gain aquatic research experience in Lake Michigan! I was able to develop skills capturing fish with sein nets, neuston nets, and collecting plankton as well as identifying them. I learned a lot about the history of Lake Michigan, including the native food web and the introduction of invasive species, such as sea lamprey and Dreissenid mussels. I also gained experience in presenting research via a poster and a presentation and was also exposed to discussing ecosystem issues with stake holders in the community. I really appreciated how much inclusion we had with planning our research projects. Also, it was amazing to be able to spend the summer on Beaver Island because it is such a beautiful place and has so much history.
