I loved working as a waterski instructor, the location was great (beautiful area), and the staff was awesome. Working was very rewarding and fun.

Advice

Roger (the owner of the camp) will say this- you have to buy into the experience. If you don’t, it’s less fun for you and you probably won’t be as good at your job. If you go in enthusiastic and attentive, I promise it will pay off and you will have a great time. It’s more fun for you and the kids will love you too!

What I liked

I loved having the experience of moving across the country, doing what I love, and making friendships that will last a lifetime.

What I wish was different

I wish I could have counted this as an internship with Concordia.

Advice

If you are wanting to have a unique experience and have the best summer of your life, definitely take the leap and work at Camp Laurel South. It may seem daunting to move across the country to work at a camp in Maine, but this was one of the most transformational experiences I've ever had.

Advice

I think that everyone should at least have one summer where you are working as a counselor. Being an exercise physiology major, I have trained mostly with adults, but it was a totally different experience training with children. It gave me a new confidence in the every day work I do because once you know how to teach children, you can do anything.

Camp Counselor

June - August 2018 • Casco, ME

What I liked

I loved the opportunity to work in an unfamiliar setting and so something that I have never done before. Being a camp counselor at the end of the day is all about the kids that you spend three and a half weeks with. I loved the high energy that came from my co-counselors. I also love that camp is all about smiles, no matter where you look, everyone is smiling and it is extremely heartwarming.

What I wish was different

I wish that I jumped right into the high energy when I got there. I don't tend to be a shy person but during orientation I was extremely overwhelmed by all of the information and people that were there that I stopped myself from truly enjoying the first few days.

Advice

Do it! This experience made me enjoy the little things in life so much more than I did to begin with. It gave me a thirst for adventure and people that I will know for a lifetime. It wasn't easy by any means but it was worth it. Looking back, I would say that if you are going to do this, do it wholeheartedly. This isn't a job that you can lack energy with because the kids thrive off of what you give off. Get into it right away!
