Teaching Fellow

June - August 2019 • New York City, NY

What I liked

It was an amazing opportunity to have classroom experience among my peers who had a similar passion for education as myself.

What I wish was different

Advice

Be excited and open to opportunities! This was my second summer with them with everything paid, and I wouldn't have had such a great experience if I wasn't willing to go somewhere I had never been before.

Teaching Fellow

June - August 2019 • New York City, NY

What I liked

I liked how I got to teach in a classroom by myself. I am used to shadowing so having the responsibility to teach was good and challenging. Was well organized and structured as well.

What I wish was different

I thought training was too long and could have been done in a week.

Advice

Its challenging and lots of lesson plan requirements but it is worth it.

Summer Teaching Fellow

June - August 2018 • New York City, NY

What I liked

As Breakthrough New York teaching fellow, I was able to grow as a young professional while working with a community with different ideas, yet dedicated to making a change in the life of our students. It was an experience I will never forget as I learned more about myself and how I value teamwork and the mission of my employer.

What I wish was different

Before I left Breakthrough New York, I spoke with my supervisor about the inequities among the three sites--The Bronx, Manhattan, and Brooklyn. Due to the fact that my students felt more marginalized for being in the most worn-down school and semi-edible food, they had a harder time adapting to the program. I wish our training to understand how to cope and help our students in this situation could have been better.

Advice

Join BTNY if you are willing to commit your summer to your students. Although this summer experience is demanding and at times you feel like you are going to fail, the pillars of knowledge gain at the end of the summer are worth it.
