I liked their Academic to Industry Program which paired me with an engineering mentor who gave me professional advice on both my hard and soft skills. In addition I enjoyed being able to work directly on a project and have a significant impact.

I wish I had been able to see the work I was doing be put to use later down the line.

Technical Intern

What I liked
There are many things I like about Belcan. The best part is the people there. I already knew a few people from last year, but even my first year it was easy to talk to them and get help on a project or technical difficulty. Some other nice perks included being able to listen to podcasts and music while working and choosing one’s hours. As long as you completed 40 hours a week while being there for scheduled meetings and getting work done, there were no problems. I tended to stay late early in the week to have a fast Friday.
Something else I enjoyed were the projects I worked on. This included a design project where I had to figure out if a differently shaped pipe was better for the criteria, and an analysis project where I meshed and processed a plane rig in ANSYS classic.
What I wish was different
The part I wish had been different the most is an increase in projects. I was on multiple projects that were supposed to start soon, but then didn’t or I couldn’t be on it for multiple reasons. Usually something that had to be done first got delayed or GE wouldn’t approve me for something since I was a coop. It would’ve been nicer if I had a project like last year that continued for my whole time there as I would’ve had more project hours. However I did like the little projects I was on that I only worked on for a week or two. It was just a shame that something went wrong outside of my control a few times.
Advice
Talk to people somewhat regularly. Last year I went to people for help more often and sat next to people who were newer too. I wish I did speak with people more this year as I enjoyed it more and some things would’ve been easier, but I didn’t want to bother anyone.
Also, pay attention to the training, as you’ll see some familiar equations. I think it’s easier to understand the ramifications and realistic results of some classes now.
