What I liked

The team atmosphere was amazing! Everyone got along well with each other, and management was super helpful and caring.

What I wish was different

I wish scheduling was more flexible; it was difficult to get more hours once the schedule for the next two weeks was submitted.

Advice

Definitely interact with the residents! They have so many stories and experiences to share and it's a great way to get to know them.

CNA

June 2020 • Medford, OR

What I liked

They had an amazing staffing team that made me love making my schedule and she managed to make everything work smooth with asking for time off etc.

What I wish was different

I wish the communication from the Human Resources team was a little more transparent. I wouldn't hear back from them for weeks and would have to leave messages and write multiple emails to get a reply. This made it challenging to work through paperwork and other reimbursement and signing bonus processes, causing a lot of stress.

Advice

It is definitely worth it to invest in taking a CNA class if you plan on going into the health field. You learn so many valuable skills and get put into a lot of uncomfortable and challenging situations that make you learn really important skills at a faster pace than most other health care jobs. It was the first job where I had been put in charge of the well-being of actually people, some of which are not able to perform their own activities of daily living. You learn how to handle very important responsibilities and overall get a really rewarding experience.

Medication Aide

May - August 2020 • Portland, OR

What I liked

I thought the experience was amazing, and the residents taught me a lot. I think this experience is perfect for anyone who wants to go into healthcare to get more experience.

What I wish was different

The job was very difficult and I would often come home totally exhausted and unable to do anything else, but that is the nature of a lot of jobs in healthcare so I think it is good to prepare myself to work under these conditions.

Advice

Because the pacing is so independent, you can give yourself frequent breaks if you want. However, if you decide to instead spend that extra time getting to know the residents and helping them out in any way that you can, you will get much more out of the experience and you will feel like you made a lasting impact.

Cna

June - September 2018 • Lake Oswego, OR

What I liked

The pearl at Lake Oswego was a good environment to work in. A lot of other cnas were also students, mostly nursing, so we all got along pretty well and I made a couple friends. The nurses were helpful for the most part and residents were great as well. Pretty chill setting and good way to gain clinical hours.

What I wish was different

Scheduling was inconsistent at times and overtime was looked down upon because the facility is kind of broke. As always there was favoritism among select nurses. It was always very hard to find coverage if someone called in sick. There was also no price differential or any benefits for me, maybe because I was just a summer worker.

Advice

Night shifts are the most chill in my opinion, if you’re able to stay up. Try to get along with nurses and cnas and make friends, it’ll make your job a lot easier.
