What I liked

I enjoyed the environment and employees at Austal. They were very helpful and encouraging. They gave me projects to help me grow academically and professionally.

What I wish was different

There is a huge learning curve. One could be discouraged when brought into this environment. But if you keep at it, you will get the swing of that.

Advice

Prepare to learn quickly and do not be afraid to ask questions. Get involved in projects.

The work at Austal varied each week. I never got bored because I was always somewhere new doing something different.

What I wish was different

I wish my fall schedule, between classes and taking care of my kids, would have allowed me to stay on.

Advice

take advantage of this opportunity if you are offered. It really gives you a good feel for if ship building is the right area for you.

Intern Buyer

What I liked

First and foremost I appreciated the great pay. Austal USA pays well, especially for internships. I also enjoy the fact that the position allowed me opportunity to develop a lot of interpersonal and communication skills as I dealt with salespeople in many B2B organizations. These are situations that many don't find themself in when in a typical retail or sales environment.

What I wish was different

I wish there had been better training. Austal very much is the kind of place that could be described as sink or swim. The position requires a working knowledge of excel and customer service skills, the rest of it is learned on the job. I was thrown to the wolves, and it contributed greatly to unneeded stress, particularly during a busy school year.

Advice

Be ready to work. This is an internship, but it is also a full-fledged job in the manufacturing field. Your peers are adults and you should act as such. This sin't a "go get coffee" type internship, it includes the same workload as the salaried buyers that are already employed, and Austal has no qualms about letting underperformers go. This is first and foremost, a job.
