Materials Testing Intern
May - August 2020 • Clifton Park, NY
What I liked
This internship provided me with a lot of hands-on training and learning. I enjoyed the fact that once I became certified, I was sent out on my own to complete tests. In some ways it helped me jump right in, learn to ask questions and ask for help, and figure out how to do my job successfully. I also appreciated the willingness of everyone at the company to answer questions and help whenever I needed it.
What I wish was different
Sometimes I wish I had been able to be one of the interns that was trained in a wider variety of tasks, but with that said, I was given several forms of training that made my job even more interesting.
Advice
For a job like this, it is easier to be successful for someone who is not afraid to ask for help and who is confident enough to reach out to people when this is the case. However, especially with the way they send you out on your own, an employee here has to be able to be independent and capable of doing most things on their own. The nature of this job sometimes means varying hours, long days, less than ideal working conditions, etc, so employees need to be flexible and be able to handle day-to-day and changing schedules.
