Physical Test Engineering Intern

What I liked

Every person that I've met at ATI has been helpful and kind. I was never treated like I didn't know anything and that included the men and women on the forge shop floor, to the engineers, all the way up to Jim Meudt (President of ATI Forged Products). My job experiences ranged from a few continuous improvement projects using Lean principles, some 3D printing to make replacement parts for measuring instruments, and fixture design. I was also involved with the community outreach organization at work and was able to vote and voice my opinion on where to distribute money for some local charities. ATI has a huge backlog of projects for private and public industries and they are growing steadily. Great opportunity for MSOE grads who want to work in an Aerospace Manufacturing setting.

What I wish was different

I was given a few projects initially, but I was able to knock them out pretty quickly. After they were complete, I basically had to ask around to see if I could do anything for anyone. Basically, I wish they had a portfolio of projects to work on...but I can understand why they don't when everyone is busy and pulled all different directions. Silver lining: I MET AND WORKED WITH A TON OF PEOPLE. Great networking experience and I know everyone most people in the engineering department now that I bugged them for work so often!

Advice

I loved it here. Be proactive and ask around for work. Volunteer your ideas. If you see anything that doesn't seem right or unsafe, bring it up and come up with a plan to fix it. Best thing I did was go around and ask the workers on the floor what I could do or what they need to make their job easier and faster.

Take this opportunity into your own hands. Reach out to other people and do your best to do more.

Summer Help

What I liked

I enjoyed being given projects to work on on my own, which I feel will help me in jobs in the future. My supervisor also provided an excellent example for leadership.

What I wish was different

I would have liked to have been hired sooner as I was off nearly an entire month before I was officially hired.

Advice

Don't give generic answers about what you want to do when you're interviewing-- being open about what you want to achieve helps the company place you in the right department.

Project Engineering Intern

What I liked

Excellent culture. Everyone was very welcoming and treated the interns as if they were professional engineers.

What I wish was different

More technically challenging work could have been interesting, otherwise the project management and problem solving opportunities were satisfactory.

Chemical Laboratory Technician

I've enjoyed the company of my coworkers, a safety-first environment, ample overtime opportunities, and good pay.

What I wish was different

I wish I had applied for the position earlier!

Advice

Position titles aren't everything. Leverage your education and skills (even in entry level work!) and pursue every opportunity that interests you. At worst, you're turning down a few job offers before you find a nice fit.
