What I liked

The staff was very welcoming and took the time to explain everything I asked about. The environment was quiet and calm, and the all the patients had different backgrounds. I could see myself becoming a physician who takes the time to speak with their patients on a more personal and professional manner because of this internship. The nurses took the time to walk me through their responsibilities and the volunteer coordinator brings so much joy.

What I wish was different

More patient interaction would be nice. Some days the patients were with their families or sleeping

Advice

Hospice is not known to be joyous and fast pace; take the time to get to know the space that you are in. Have thoughtful conversations with the staff and the patients. Sometimes, most of the patients just need someone to talk to.

What I liked

I really enjoyed working at the hospice center with everyone. It is a very small organization, so you get to know everyone and work with everyone really well. I was able to work with the administrative team and the volunteer coordinator to make sure everything was running smoothly and to recruit more volunteers. Overall, it was a really fun and great experience.

What I wish was different

I wish I had taken the internship at a different time because it was cut short by the pandemic.

Advice

Don't be afraid to talk to the staff and ask if they need any more help or if you need help. They are more than willing to help you learn and understand, and it doesn't hurt to reach out and do more while you are there.

What I liked

I liked working closely with the nurses and LPNs in the facility and learning about certain healthcare procedures and protocols that I would use in my future career. I also got to meet many helpful people that encouraged me on my future goals and want to help me achieve them.

What I wish was different

I wish the internship could have been paid that way I could have devoted more of my time working at the facility rather than juggling the internship and a part-time job.

Advice

Do not be afraid to ask questions or ask for advice because from my experience the people I worked with were happy to help me and walk me through any concerns that I had about joining the medical field.
