I really loved working with the clients I had. Helping them learn lifeskills was a joy, and they made me laugh on the daily.
What I wish was different
The pay was quite low. If the pay was higher, I would have been willing to stay. I was forced to join a union I didn't want any part of, which required dues and also unfortunately came with an unexpected side effect- if my clients called off, or if weather wasn't permitting for us to be out, I could be forced to work at a site I never worked in before, such as a house or a different day hab. I didn't find that very fair, and the union was just a downside I wish I didn't have to deal with.
Advice
Try things you think you wouldn't have been able to do before. I never thought I'd be able to work with those with developmental disabilities, but I have learned so much from them and the experiences I've had.
