Arkansas State Crime Laboratory

Rotational Summer Intern

June - August 2020 • Little Rock, AR

What I liked

The work and the people. I was in the DNA section. The job included half and half of lab setting and desk setting, which I didn’t mind at all. The employees are driven to do their best and also find the time to connect and get to know one another. They made me feel welcome and were always so helpful when I needed it. If you’re interested in a job, they take extra time to let you know what you need in order to start your career path.

What I wish was different

Nothing on their end, I wish I had come a little more prepared than I was. They worked with me anyways and I am so thankful.

Advice

A genetics course and strong biology background is useful beforehand. It’s is also good to have some lab experience and to know how to work with pipettes and lab equipment at a smaller scale. Attention to detail in the lab is very important and it’s okay to take your time. They don’t care how fast you do it, you have plenty of time in the day. Doing it right is what matters. Even if you don’t know how to do all of these things before this internship, they will take the time to show you everything you need to know. They are really good about hands-on teaching.
