Archival Research Intern

May - August 2019 • New York City, NY

What I liked

I liked the work I was doing. Every day, I would come in to the office and work on collecting and organizing archival for the documentary the company was working on. That meant I got to look at a lot of photos, watch old home videos and news segments. I also got to do research on topics, and do briefs for talking head interviews. Occasionally, I would get to go on set for filming which I found fun too.

What I wish was different

I wish the interns had been more engaged with the process all along. It always felt like we were a little out of the loop, and it was hard to do our jobs well without knowing all of the context of the movie. They started to do this eventually, but it was almost already towards the end of the summer. Also, I wish I had gotten paid.

Advice

I would say try to take the internship that seems most interesting to you, and it doesn't necessarily need to be one on your "career path." It can be as helpful to rule something out as to rule something in.
