Amity Hospice

Hospice Home Care Social Worker

June 2019 • Dallas, TX

What I liked

I enjoyed getting to know the employees at Amity Hospice and having the opportunity to work with a variety of patients and their families. The employees of Amity really have a passion for what they do and it shows in how the patients and family members are cared for.

What I wish was different

I wish I had known about Amity years ago. They are a small company and not as known in the industry as some of the larger companies.

Advice

Many people shy away from working or volunteering in hospice because they think it is about helping the patient die, when in fact it is about helping the patient live their best life in the time they have left.

What I liked

I enjoyed the experience of being a supportive presence to families undergoing grief at the impending passing of a loved one. It is a priviledge to be a small part of their lives during a painful time and I appreciate their allowing me to do so. I learned a great deal about the holistic and interdisciplinary aspects of hospice care.

Advice

I would advise having an open mind and focus on the needs of patient and family, even if it is emotionally challenging. Clients are comforted by a non family member being there for them, so they can cope and indulge in some self-care such as a nap.
