AmeriCorps VISTA

June - August 2023 • Middleton, WI

What I liked

My host sponsor as well as all of the summer staff were amazing and very supportive. The work I was doing was very impactful and rewarding. While some tasks were the same throughout the year, there was always something new and flexibility in my day.

What I wish was different

The only thing that I wish had been different was more opportunities for behind the scenes work.

Advice

I would recommend stepping out of your comfort zones and take positions that you might not regularly take. This position gave me the opportunity to grow in many areas.

Intern for the Office of Mayor Hardie Davis, Jr.

June - July 2021 • Augusta, GA

What I liked

The AmeriCorps VISTA program was very flexible with on-site work placements and ensured that the site I was placed at fit my experience, skills, and personal values. The flexibility of being allowed to choose the length of your work term commitment was also a great benefit that came with the position. I loved the VISTA program because, as an extension of AmeriCorps's core mission, it is centered around service and devotion to improving a community on all levels, which aligns perfectly with who I am. In my specific placement with the Mayor's Office in the Augusta Richmond County Municipal Government, I had an abundance of opportunities to develop new professional skills and network with prominent connections.

What I wish was different

I wish that the onboarding process for the position would have been a bit smoother and more intuitive. The application process to become an AmeriCorps VISTA was long and occasionally confusing/frustrating.

Advice

I would highly recommend that anyone who loves serving others and is interested in being an AmeriCorps VISTA apply for the position. It requires people who are hard-working, creative, adaptable, personable, and team-oriented, but it is an experience that people who take it will have so much to gain from.
