American Eagle Outfitters

Brand Ambassador

May - August 2023 • New York City, NY

What I liked

Everyone was kind, communicative, and willing to help me if I had any questions.

What I wish was different

The schedule was published weekly and could be different every week. This made it very difficult and inconvenient to find fit in other work or plans in between, as you wouldn't know what your schedule was before hand.

Advice

Make sure to make the most out of every experience. Although a lot of the work in this position was repetitive and not at all what I want to do in the future, I got a lot out of the experience through my day-to-day interactions. Working inside a clothing store, I had to interact with all kinds of people from different backgrounds and had many meaningful conversations with people by being willing to talk beyond just "that's where the jeans are."

What I liked

I love the environment and the flexible schedule. I’m still there.

What I wish was different

I came in at a busy time so I didn’t have the traditional orientation experience.

Advice

Just send an application in anywhere you’re interested. You never know what’ll happen.

Sales Associate

December 2021 • Bridgewater, NJ

What I liked

Flexible hours, working as part of a team

What I wish was different

I wish there were opportunity for pay raises. Store managers do not have the power to offer raises—it has to come from corporate and because of this your salary is essentially stagnant unless you get promoted to a higher paying position.

Advice

I think working in retail has given me a lot of transferrable skills; most notably effective communication. It teaches you to diffuse tense situations, think quickly, speak persuasively, and have confidence.

Store Associate

July - September 2023 • Paramus, NJ

What I liked

The discount is amazing and depending on the manager, you get to actually bond with your coworkers.

What I wish was different

There was one bad manager I should have written a report about. I feel like without her, the environment wouldn't feel so stressful.

Advice

If you have social anxiety or do not like crossing a stranger's (customer's) boundaries, try to not be on the sales floor.

What I liked

I liked my coworkers as everyone was friendly and the work environment.

What I wish was different

When putting in my 2 weeks, I immediately was removed from the system. Had I known I would have waited to put my 2 weeks in.

Advice

Be vigilant as people try to steal.

What I liked

I liked gaining retail clothing experience specifically how stores would place products either within the front of the store or the back. I liked being able to work with customers where I was able to use customer service skills I developed with other companies.

What I wish was different

Honestly, nothing for that matter. I really enjoy working at American Eagle.

Advice

An advice I would give is be open to new experiences. I was able to develop my sales pitch skills as well as learn the specific products. You are going to make mistakes and that is okay. Keeping yourself accountable and asking questions along the way, will help you succeed in this position
