Software Engineer Intern

June - August 2023 • Richmond, VA

What I liked

I would say my favorite aspect of working at AMC is the other engineers. They are not only good as mentors, but interpersonal interactions were also a pleasure. Although still professional, the environment is very casual. Additionally, I would like to give a shoutout to the CEO of the company, Tony Uliano. Company demos were a lot less anxiety inducing; he would always provide supportive feedback. I would like to mention that I am writing this review as a returning intern. I would not have returned if I did not enjoy my experience with them. I would also like to mention that although I am writing this review in context of the full-time summer program, AMC has offered part-time intern positions during the fall and spring semesters. They value your education. They offer very flexible times slots for shifts to work around your school schedule.

What I wish was different

Unfortunately, sometimes full-time developers (including project mentors) are busy with higher priority tasks. If you reach a roadblock during this time, progress may slow down to a halt. This is not a criticism as they are doing the correct thing as a business. Just be aware that there may be moments where you will be roadblocked longer than desired.

Advice

Ask developers plenty of questions, especially those that cannot be answered by Google or AI. Don't let the first couple of weeks intimidate you. Their boot camp program in the beginning is purposely designed to be very fast paced. Once you are assigned your project for the summer, you will be able to learn at a pace that is much more manageable.

What I liked

I had a fantastic experience during my Software Engineer Internship at AMC Technology, LLC. One of the highlights was the opportunity to be treated like an actual developer from the start. This immersive approach allowed me to truly dive into meaningful projects and gain hands-on experience in a real-world development environment. I also greatly appreciated the close collaboration with other skilled developers. The chance to work closely with them not only enhanced my technical skills but also provided valuable insights into effective teamwork and problem-solving.

What I wish was different

While my internship was overall very rewarding, there were certain aspects I wished had been different. Specifically, I found the organization of the Bootcamp to be a bit lacking. Clearer communication and a more structured approach could have improved the learning experience for all participants. Additionally, one aspect that I found disappointing was the management's response to feedback. I believe that open communication and addressing concerns are crucial for growth, and it would have been more beneficial if the management had been more receptive to the feedback provided by the interns.

Advice

For future interns considering an opportunity at AMC Technology, LLC, I would advise embracing the chance to fully engage as a software developer. Take advantage of the hands-on experience and the collaboration with other developers to learn and grow. It's important to be proactive in sharing feedback and suggestions, even if you encounter challenges in how they are received. Your insights can contribute to positive changes and improvements within the organization. Overall, my Software Engineer Internship at AMC Technology, LLC was a valuable learning experience that allowed me to develop my skills, work closely with a talented team, and gain insights into the software development industry. While there were areas for improvement, the positives far outweighed the challenges, and I'm grateful for the opportunity I had.

What I liked

The company had a warm and supportive environment. Being a technology company with less than 20 employees it was a very close knit group with casual workplace conduct that was very enjoyable. The management was extremely supportive and caring about the employees.

What I wish was different

I wish the work was more interesting, I find that it was not aligned very well to my personal interests but nonetheless the work was satisfying.

Advice

Understand this is a technology company and so your role will be heavily involved with working with and understanding software/technology.

What I liked

Overall, my experience with AMC Technology was positive. I was initially concerned with the level of web development expected of me from the company. However, AMC made the learning process easy and exciting. After boot camp, my confidence increased immensely. The level of support I received from my supervisor and other employees was succinct and valuable. Rarely did I feel like I was being fed to the wolves. If I had an issue, my supervisor always made time to walk me through my obstacles and nudge me in the direction of a solution. If my supervisor wasn’t available, other employees were eager to provide aide and further resources for my development process. The end of each development sprint would culminate with a demonstration. Each team was given the opportunity to share their progress with the rest of the development team. After each demo, members of AMC’s staff would offer suggestions and critiques of our work which helped in shaping our final applications. This experience was always encouraging, and the staff remained positive throughout the entire process.

What I wish was different

If I were to be critical of my experience at AMC at all, it would be for reasons beyond their control. As I mentioned, this internship was designed to be an in-office experience. Therefore, I chose to look past any small shortcomings I experienced as a direct result of my remote limitations. AMC's boot camp, while very informative, lacked a clear sense of structure and direction. I believe this to, again, be attributed to the sudden transition from in-person to remote learning. I have no doubt that this experience would have been smoother in an office setting.

Advice

I would encourage any student lacking confidence in web development to seek out this internship. AMC is fully aware of the fact that VCU does not currently have a curriculum centered around this topic. As such, they have developed an internship program specifically tailored for students looking to hone these skills. Having said that, AMC’s entire platform is centered around the contact center experience. If you have a limited desire to work on applications tailored toward customer service and outreach, this may not be the internship for you. Additionally, if you are not at all interested in web development and Angular programming you may want to look elsewhere, although I greatly encourage you to give it a shot. My initial feelings toward web development were tepid, at best. However, all of that has changed after having this experience. I would also recommend that any potential intern possess a machine with at LEAST 16GB of ram. When test-building some of these projects, I witnessed several fellow interns struggle to build applications in a timely manner. The amount of time lost waiting for builds adds up quickly, especially during a demonstration or when collaborating with your team. From a remote standpoint, invest in a quality microphone -- do not rely on your laptop's built in mic. The audio quality is unsatisfactory and background noise is a constant distraction to others.

What I liked

Great environment despite the difficulties of a remote internship. Everyone is super helpful and colleagues are supportive. I enjoyed the daily standups and bi-weekly demos.

What I wish was different

I wish we had the opportunity to come in person, I feel like the office experience is really something I missed out on during this internship, due to no fault of AMC however, just the current situation because of COVID

Advice

I would say this is an incredible growth opportunity for new interns, it really shows that you can learn and do anything you set your mind to.
