TJ Parker, a second-generation pharmacist, spent most of his life watching people struggle with managing their medications -- dozens of pill bottles, weekly trips to the pharmacy, and time-consuming DIY organization -- while their pharmacists had limited resources to help. The entire system was complicated, confusing, and did little to support health or wellness. TJ had one foot in the world of pharmacy and one foot in the realm of design and technology, and he always thought there was a better way. While finishing pharmacy school, TJ met Elliot Cohen through [MIT’s Hacking Medicine][1]. They started PillPack (http://www.pillpack.com) to prove that managing meds could actually be simple. They recognized that fixing pharmacy requires actually building a better pharmacy. After making it their mission to challenge traditional retail pharmacies, TJ and Elliot focused first on helping the people with the toughest problem - the 30 million US adults (that’s 1 in 10) who take more than five prescription medications a day. From the beginning, PillPack’s mission has been to deliver a delightful customer experience. We believe that simple, convenient service empowers regular people to take medications correctly and achieve better overall wellness. [1]: http://hackingmedicine.mit.edu/
In 2018, Amazon acquired PillPack, a full-service pharmacy focused on customers who take three or more medications each day. PillPack is designed for customers who live with chronic health conditions and take multiple medications. Medications are delivered in monthly pre-sorted dose packaging to simplify complex prescription instructions across all medications, making it easier for customers to take their medications as prescribed.
We used the foundations of PillPack to create the Amazon Pharmacy online store. This offering serves individuals who have a range of different pharmacy needs and want to shop for prescription medications through the Amazon.com store. Customers can create an account to access Amazon Pharmacy through the Amazon online store or an account with PillPack by Amazon Pharmacy on the PillPack website. These two experiences are different ways to access the same pharmacy. Both experiences are underpinned by our commitment to making it simple for customers to fill their prescriptions.
