Supply Chain Intern

May - August 2023 • Richmond, VA

What I liked

My experience with the company was amazing as it gave me the opportunity to gain a holistic understanding of the entire supply chain from beginning to end. Traveling to different facilities allowed me to witness firsthand how our operations in the field corresponded with the work we conducted in the office at the headquarters. Furthermore, I also got the opportunity to work on a real-life project that was successfully implemented by the end of the summer. Overall, I highly recommend this internship experience to others, as it provided me with invaluable insights and practical knowledge that will benefit me in my future career endeavors, and learned beyond what I could have learned in my classes.

What I wish was different

Advice

Be open from the beginning and ask a lot of questions.

One thing I wish was different was that they should have went over what we’re doing as interns before the start of it . But overall it was a great experience.

Advice

In the internship advice I would give is to network more and build relationships with the managers and owners of the stores in your selected territory.

Sales and Marketing Intern

May - August 2021 • Charlottesville, VA

What I liked

I really enjoyed and valued the Sales and Marketing summer internship that I completed with Altria. The internship was comprised of a combination of in-field days, with Territory Sales Managers, and online days comprised of software training, networking sessions, intern team-work, and business skills development workshops sponsored by employee-resource groups. Throughout the Internship, two large projects were completed: an individual project that challenged me to identify business opportunities, employ data analysis skills, and present to a leadership board, as well as a group project that allowed me to work at the corporate level with a Key Account (mine was Sheetz). In addition, the company culture and the way Altria treats their employees is amazing! I had a mentor, coach, and manager that consistently challenged and supported me. I was also able to learn about many different departments and roles within the company; everyone, no matter what level of the company, was happy to speak about their role and give advice in one-on-one networking meetings. I happily accepted the full-time position, as I learned Altria is a company that I love to work for, and I'm looking forward to the full time benefits including a company vehicle, great pay, and an educational refund program.

What I wish was different

I wish I had the opportunity to work in-person with my intern team. While we collaborated a lot, it was mainly virtual (partially due to COVID). It does take some time getting used to not working in a traditional office setting, but by the end of the internship I found that I preferred this hybrid mode of work.

Advice

I would advise applicants to be open-minded about working in the Tobacco Industry. Apply and go into the internship or job position open to learning about the company vision, the way employees interact, and the way Altria values their employees. If you do this, I think you will find that working for this company is a great career choice.

Sales Manager Intern

May - July 2021 • Bloomington, IN

What I liked

I loved how much independence Altria gave their interns. That coupled with the ability to network with Senior Leadership and the constant support of other Sales and Market Managers throughout the internship provided an invaluable experience.

What I wish was different

I wish there had been more opportunities to connect with other staff and interns outside of the sales role to get a better feel on how the rest of the company operated.

Advice

Network as much as possible! With the experience being somewhat virtual due to Covid-19 there was plenty of time to reach out to other Interns, Sales Managers, Senior Leaders, all are more then happy to connect for a virtual coffee chat.

Sales Intern

June - August 2020 • East Lansing, MI

What I liked

I liked all the people that I worked with, they were so welcoming and friendly and made me feel comfortable. I also like the fact that I was able to contribute to real-life decision making that would actually affect the company. On top of the fact that I was the intern award.

What I wish was different

I wish I was able to have been in person, due to the outbreak of corona we had to go completely virtual so I was not able to get the in person experience that we would originally would have had.

Advice

The advice I would give is to create a schedule, and to get to know as many as people as possible. Meeting people not only helped to know more about the company, but it helped with I needed assistance with projects.

What I liked

Great culture. Very supportive and a lot of opportunities to ask questions and receive feedback. I also received real work similar to what full-time employees did.

What I wish was different

I wish it was in person however I was glad they did a remote internship rather than cancel. I also sometimes wish there was some more clear guidance on assignments but there were always people to reach out to regarding questions and concerns.

Advice

Networking is important in this company and there are a lot of people to reach out to. Also, be very clear and direct with your managers. They give you feedback and you can give them feedback as well.

Finance/Accounting Undergraduate Intern

June - August 2020 • Richmond, VA

What I liked

This internship experience was amazing, even though it was a virtual internship. I worked in the tax department and focused on a tax specific project. I also worked with 5 other finance/accounting interns in other areas of the finance department and we worked on a project about the affect COVID has had on Altria. Both projects were real work and allowed me to apply what I've learned in school to the real world. Everyone was SO supportive and welcoming, and Altria did a great job with executing their first virtual internship. I was still able to connect with so many people. The intern coordinators had little events for the interns to participate in, which made it so much fun.

What I wish was different

I wish that the internship had been in person. It was nice to be at home and turn on my laptop and be at work in 1 minute, however I believe that I would've been able to connect with people on a more personal level if the internship had been in person. This is the only thing that I wish had been different. Everything else about the internship was great.

Advice

I would say ask questions and connect and reach out to as many people as you can. Networking and getting to know the people at Altria is so important, and gives you a great idea of the people you could be working with. Participate in the Employee Resource Groups (EGRs). These are so much fun to learn about the diversity of Altria and to get more involved in the organization.

Manufacturing Intern

May - August 2019 • Richmond, VA

What I liked

I really liked how hands-on my projects were and how I was a part of a meaningful team. I worked on a project that can potentially save $200,000 annually for the company. I was able to get exposure in a manufacturing facility and work in a process engineering role. My team was supportive and encouraged me to observe other operations going on and to ask questions. Also, getting paired with mentors really helped in my professional and technical growth.

What I wish was different

Advice

Reach out to people outside the department you're working in; set up a time to meet for lunch and get to know their job and career path.
