Agahozo-Shalom Youth Village

Intern

June - August 2017 • Kigali, Kigali

What I liked

I had a fantastic internship experience at Agahozo-Shalom, both personally and professionally. The Village is an incredibly warm and welcoming community, and I connected very quickly with both my supervisor, my colleagues, and my students. I gained exposure to the workings of an international educational nonprofit, and because I had a significant amount of leeway to implement my own projects, I was able to develop and refine my project management skills over the course of the summer. Most of all, I cherished the people I was surrounded by every day at work, who taught me how communities can heal through love, learning, and service to others as no course or instructor ever could.

What I wish was different

Advice

Know coming into the internship that there is no way to help your students as much as you will want to while you're at the Village, but that Bates will prove an invaluable resource afterwards to continue to support the Village community.
