FP&A Intern

June - August 2019 • Los Angeles, CA

What I liked

I was involved in meaningful projects that contributed to the FP&A team's reporting processes. The internship challenged me to learn and adapt quickly, while improving useful skills along the way such as Excel financial modeling. I had access to AECOM's regional and corporate executives on a daily basis. The internship paid well and provided many corporate benefits.

What I wish was different

The FP&A internship coincided with the FP&A team's planning season which meant my manager was consistently busy with deadlines. While he did his best to provide me with the resources I needed to succeed, communication and deadlines were not always clearly communicated and assistance was not always accessible when needed.

Advice

Always be prepared in FP&A as ad hoc reporting is part of the daily routine. New reports are always needed to improve existing reporting structures and processes. It provides a chance to show off creative abilities and talent under pressure.

Summer Electrical Engineering Intern

May - August 2019 • Morehead City, NC

What I liked

I was on a small, tight-knit team so I got to know my coworkers really well. I was immediately immersed in the team's project and felt that my contributions were important and valued. I received a lot of hands-on engineering experiences and learned general workplace skills that you can't get in school.

What I wish was different

Because we were at a small office separated from the rest of the company, I didn't get to meet many people in general, much less people in various company roles. I really appreciated our unique environment but this was one small drawback.

Advice

Really dive into the project as much as your skills will allow! Be open to learning to do new things you're not necessarily familiar with, as all these skills are helpful in the engineering workplace.

Urban Design Intern

May - July 2018 • Hong Kong, Hong Kong

What I liked

The hands-on experience of learning how to use design applications, such as Adobe Illustrator and SketchUp, was an immensely helpful experience for me. It also taught me a lot about my personal interests and my career journey and direction in life. I realized that I missed the buzz and fast-paced life of school and education, and made me realize as well that graduate school was a path I would more strongly consider. I made a rough plan of my life after my undergraduate years to work a job for a few years, then go back to grad school to earn a masters in urban planning or design, then return to working to really establish a more focused career base.

What I wish was different

Advice

The internship taught me many tips on what it is like working in the urban design and urban planning field, such as teaching me the discipline of sitting in an office all day and speaking with coworkers on projects.
