AARP PA

Communication Intern

June - August 2019 • Philadelphia, PA

What I liked

Working at AARP gave me hands on experience in a number of different areas, and allowed for me to gain knowledge in the non-profit sector of communications work. I loved getting to build a strong network through the connections that AARP has, as well as learn from incredible mentors.

What I wish was different

I wish that I had been able to extend my internship longer to continue to learn.

Advice

Don’t be afraid to ask for help, but also don’t be afraid to do uncomfortable things! Going in I had never pitched a story before but after receiving guidance from my mentor throughout the summer I was able to get some great placements and interviews for our events. Although it was an uncomfortable experience at times having to call journalists, doing so with an open mind taught me a lot about the field and the position.
