What I wish was different

Office Assistant

May - July 2019 • Young Harris, GA

What I liked

I loved the community and environment around the job. The job was Christ-centered and ministerial for both children and the staff. I made many friends from across the country.

What I wish was different

The rules were slightly strict as far as bed time and dress code went. Overall though, it was all beneficial because it forced me to rest and also set a wholesome example for the campers.

Advice

I would advise anyone to try it out for the summer. It was truly an incredible experience for me and so many others. It is challenging, but as with anything, I'd encourage you to maintain a positive attitude and just have fun with the job in spite of the inevitable challenges .

Bonus Counselor

May - July 2019 • Young Harris, GA

What I liked

I liked being able to work with kids and being active almost constantly. I liked the work environment and also my coworkers. I also enjoyed the atmosphere at camp. Everyone cultivated an atmosphere of openness and encouragement that flowed from the counselors and other staff and down to the kids we were serving in order to make camp the best experience possible and show God's love in all our actions.

What I wish was different

One thing I would change about my camp experience is how people treated their position sometimes. At times it was frustrating how all of us got used to doing our job and had trouble switching positions when we were called to help in a role we were not used to. This made working difficult occasionally because it is hard to switch into a role that is different than the everyday role we were used to.

Advice

To be encouraging and open to others. It is easy to complain about the hard things that happen day to day when working a job that starts at 7 AM and ends at 11 PM. Nevertheless, the hard work and perseverance I gained from this job will help me in future roles as I grow and move into new working environments.

Camp Counselor

May - July 2018 • Atlanta, GA

What I liked

While working at WinShape Camps, I discovered that I absolutely love to have fun with kids while sharing the Gospel with them. Seeing the joy on the camper's faces ultimately made me feel joyful even at times when I felt exhausted.

What I wish was different

There wasn't really much that I wished was different about working at camp with the exception of having limited access to our communication devices but I agreed that when I work, my main focus should only be on the campers and not on my communication device.

Advice

My mid-summer, exhaustion was carrying a whole lot of my co-counselors as well as I down. However, remembering that every week we received new campers who are eager to experience camp for either the first time or for another week during the summer. Always encouraging each other and lifting each other up is what always helped whenever me other the other counselors felt exhausted because by the end of the summer when we look back at those 8 weeks, we become filled with joy because we know that we made an impact of the lives of those campers.

Senior Camp- Camp Counselor

May - July 2018 • Rome, GA

What I liked

I enjoyed the culture of Winshape Camps and the other staff members. If I had an issue whether it was camp-related or not, I knew I could talk to any of the staff members and they would help me. It is well-organized camp. Camp counselors always had a schedule on hand with specific times and if anything changed we were notified immediately.

What I wish was different

The only difficult part was the campers, but WinShape can't do anything about the kids coming to camp, considering WinShape is accepting of everyone. I found it to be a good test of my character, building traits like patience, acceptance, and persistence.

Advice

WinShape is a great place to work. It is a great community and character builder.

Team Time Leader

May - August 2018 • Rome, GA

What I liked

I enjoyed getting to teach kids material that I was very familiar with, and I enjoyed getting to relate to them and share the Gospel with them. Honestly, I enjoyed getting to be a kid during the week while I was running the camp, and then on the weekends I enjoyed getting to interact with my team. I also very much enjoyed my fellow employees.

What I wish was different

I wish there had been more communication about the schedule during the summer, and I wish there had been more communication about expectations for the summer beforehand. I also wish there had been more personal time.

Advice

I would recommend preparing yourself spiritually before embarking for the summer. That was something I struggled with throughout the summer. To go along with that, I would recommend starting off the summer being very intentional about getting into the word to pour into yourself in order that you can pour into campers.

Take more candid photos than pictures that are set up. Also, get more sweet pictures of staff and campers instead of all funny pictures.

Camp Counselor

May - August 2018 • Marietta, GA

What I liked

I loved being surrounded by so many people that loved Jesus just as much as I did and with an organization that supports and encourages their employees like I have never seen before. Better yet I got to spend my days acting like I was a kid again and spending all days with kids teaching about Jesus.

What I wish was different

I wish I would of taken in the training week we had before heading to our stations, I was very nervous because I didnt know many but wow oh wow did they all turn out amazing.

Advice

Embrace it and live in the moment. Dont worry about what is to come when you get home but rather embrace how much you are supported and surrounded by some of the best people in the nation.
