I liked how hands-on they allowed the interns to be as we were able to meet with clients before their trials to prep them, meet the judges that work within the county, and gain a better understanding of the criminal system as well as the resources in Washtenaw County.
What I wish was different
I wish that I had done some of my own research before I started so that I had a better understanding of the other divisions that are involved in the Public Defender's Office. I think that having more knowledge of what the Public Defender's Office does specifically leads to a better experience.
Advice
There are moments that are going to be draining because you are dealing with the outcomes and very real situations of individuals. It can be difficult at times to not get completely involved in every person's story but realizing that the passion that you have for people to be their best selves and helping them to make better choices in the future is really rewarding.
