My employer let me make my own mistakes, which was incredibly valuable!

What I wish was different

Pullman, WA is a very dull place over the summer, especially since I did not really have coworkers in my age group.

Advice

If there's research that relates to your career but not offered by anyone at Whitman, you should email professors... the earlier the better; most grant applications are due in December or early January. Then, use the Whitman Internship Grant to pay for it, in the event you cannot get the experience funded.

Psychologist Research Assistant

What I liked

Fabulous experience learning the research processes complexities that normally go unrecognized- for instance, learning how to write a professional grant proposal was invaluable

What I wish was different

I wish that we would have had a larger team of researchers that did not have an inevitability high turn over rate as it complicated the distribution of work and natural hierarchy dynamics of the group

Advice

The work can be exhaustive - and at times, even tedious - but the hands on, real world experience earned during the process will be a huge asset to me in both my academic and professional career

Temp Dorm Custodian

What I liked

I liked that the end of the day was at 3:30 so we were able to have the rest of our day to ourselves. The staff was really nice and we were able to move to different dorms so it did not get boring.

What I wish was different

In the middle, I was moved to work at the university apartments. I did it, but it sucked because I had just gotten to know my coworkers.

Advice

The work can sometimes be gross but it was a good experience and I was able to continue working for my supervisor at a different dorm throughout the school year.

It's okay to step out of your comfort zone and pursue research (or jobs) outside of your expertise. You might find out you really like this new field, or it might open your eyes to a new way of approaching problems in the field you're already comfortable with.

Agricultural research intern

When I went to my first interview my boss asked me exactly what I wanted to get out of this internship. I explained to her that I was trying to decided if I wanted go to Gradute School. She gave me the opportunity to work all areas at the research station to make sure that I get exponiendo what my job would consist of after finishing Grad school.

What I wish was different

Nothing it went perfect.

When collecting samples at a research trial first walk through and examine the fruits. Try and find consistancy with each group and select those to sample.
