Walmart & Sam's Club

Walmart Associate

July 2017 - August 2018 • Warsaw, IN

What I liked

Decent wages for unskilled labor, excellent break schedule.

What I wish was different

I wish that the management could have worked with my school schedule better, and that my department wasn't so understaffed

Advice

Working for Walmart isn't an awful experience, but, because of their rigid scheduling practices, I would only recommend them as a summer job.

Cap team

July - September 2018 • Othello, WA

What I liked

I liked that I got to have a job where I learned even more communication skills by a different environment and even got to get connected to a job closer to where I’m going to college

What I wish was different

I wish I would have been able to do an internship but unfortunately due to financial issues I had to work all summer.

Advice

Although you may not have planned to have a certain job get connected and get to know the people around you. You never know what kind of offers it’ll bring you, networking is the best way to bring new opportunities.

What I liked

Environment, flexible schedule, lots of stuff to do with the family.

What I wish was different

Better specific financial explanation. Details about paying for living expenses were a little vague.

Business Operations Intern

May - August 2018 • Chehalis, WA

What I liked

I loved how I was exposed to a lot of aspects of business. I got to see everything from backroom, to sales floor, to home office. Walmart invested a lot of money and I respect them a lot as a company. I am really excited to return!

What I wish was different

I wish that I wouldn't have done so much associate work. A little associate work is necessary to get the feel of the store. But, I think the amount they provided me was a little bit overkill.

Advice

You can learn from everyone, even plain old Walmart associates. Never think that you have everything all figured out.

Walmart Fresh Food Associate

June - August 2018 • Bourbonnais, IL

What I liked

I enjoyed working with customers, it was a fast-paced environment that could be pretty stressful at times but it was never bad.

What I wish was different

We were pretty understaffed while I was there so that was a big issue though one hard to fix if no one is applying. There were also some big changes going on behind the scenes that I felt could have run smoother if we were a bit more organized, but because we weren't, it caused some issues, especially with inventory and scheduling.

Advice

Try and get along with your coworkers, I was lucky in that my co-workers were mostly easy to get along with, but it wasn't until this job that I found out how much drama can be had between small workgroups.

Customer Service

February - August 2018 • St. Louis, MO

What I liked

I liked the company culture it was very nice and the managemnet was great and felexiable to any situtiaon that came up.

What I wish was different

I wish that the pay was a bit higher and that I was doing more meaningful work that was related to my degree.

Advice

I would say don't get caught up into the Walmart company culture. A lot of people go into Walmart and get comfortable and don't return back to school or take breaks then never go back. I would stay focus on the bigger picture and continue your education. Walmart is good for your first job in college but makes bigger strides to get an internship in your field.

Personal Shopper

May 2018 • Tarentum, PA

What I liked

I had never worked in retail before, and this job gave me the chance to see Walmart stores in a new way. I got to learn how they functioned and be a part of it. I liked working with a team everyday to achieve our goals, and I felt that my job meant something.

What I wish was different

All new employees had to undergo 12 hours of computer training. Most of it wasn't relevant to my job, and it was hard to pay attention. I wish there had been a different way of communicating the mandatory "base" information.

Advice

It is what you make it.
