UT Health San Antonio

SPUR Student Researcher

May - August 2022 • San Antonio, TX

What I liked

Very interactive and great learning experience. Each student was assigned a mentor and laboratory in which they are also given a project for which they gather data and experiement. A lot of independence was given to each student and students were constantly run through the significance of their work. Students also presented at the end of the program. Overall, fantastic experience.

What I wish was different

Very high expectations from mentors, you are expected to spend most of your free time reading scientific articles, and respond to email late at night. Although experiences differ from lab to lab, I was obligated to present my work every other week in front of all laboratry members. I wish my ex[erience has been less tedious and demanding but it is understandable.

Advice

Be very cautious and always double check with your mentor before doing anything. Any seemingly insignificant mistake puts the entire procedure at risk and can cause the loss of hundreads of dollars of materials/apparatus. At the same time, don't be afraid of taking lead and being independent. This is your opportunity to feel like a real scientist. Enjoy it!

Summer Physiology Undergraduate Research

June - August 2021 • San Antonio, TX

What I liked

It was flexible, and it seemed like the coordinators really wanted to get to know you

What I wish was different

I wish we could have gotten to know the other interns more.

Advice

Choose who you do research with- not all of the other interns had good experiences. It really boils down to who you do research with and their scheduling/expectations.

Shadow

June - July 2018 • San Antonio, TX

What I liked

I was able to witness surgeries in theater and observe multiple implantations of a biomedical device from a local company, MedTronic. The doctor I was shadowing was extremely knowledgeable and was willing to answer any and all of my questions. My time with the UT Health Urology Department was a fantastic learning experience and something I am extremely grateful to that team for!
