REU Intern

What I liked

It was an amazing experience all around. Their REU program is fill of professional seminars and workshops that will help you succeed while doing your independent research and will be beneficial on your ongoing undergraduate careers and higher studies. The people at Oregon State University and Hatfield Marine Science Center are great, always supportive and make you feel home.

What I wish was different

I was blessed of being part of the 2019 REU cohort. I feel that everything that happened make every one of us (interns) grow and helped us being comfortable with the uncomfortable.

Advice

You should grow on skills that are fundamental for research (e.g., GIS and R).

Research for Undergraduate Statisics Experience (REU)

What I liked

I enjoyed getting experience doing Statistical research and being introduced to the graduate level of studies experience with having a university advisor who met with us every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, having ten weeks to work with a team of thirteen undergraduate statistics students. I developed my skills further in research using R code, LaTeX, and also being able to work with others. This experience has changed my career focus from wanting to just teach or tutor in mathematics and statistics to doing something with data analysis, and eventually, working one day for NASA in a team of innovators also. The final products produced from this internship is a 48 page document, including research, plots, title page and references and R code, written as a tech report in LaTeX/Overleaf coding software. Additionally, my group of three, who wrote this document on Kaplan-Meier survival curve estimators for Stochastic Ordering presented a 30-minute presentation to an advisory committee of Statistics Board members from Oregon State University, Columbia University and Rice University. This experience also helped prepare me for my Senior Math Capstone Research class I am taking this semester, involving research on a project, one-on-one with my advisor. I am also even more interested in going to graduate school now, which I was unsure I was even "good enough" for, but my initial plan before graduate school is to work 1 or 2 years then go back to graduate school by the 2022-2023 school year (if not before, as I graduate in May, 2020). I even found a passion of possibly getting an advanced degree in 'Financial Mathematics," combining my current Mathematics-Statistics major and Business Administration minor interests. Another thing, this internship helped guide me was the ability to coordinating a plan of when we would finish the project since the times we worked on the research were up to our smaller teams of three, conducting this research, as long as we were able to get the work done, and we were putting in the hours of generally a 9 to 5 job.

What I wish was different

The first four weeks of the internship were 5 "8-hour" lecture days on a Graduate Level Probability and Statistics course (4 hours of lecture, 4 hours of lab taught by a graduate student at Oregon State University), and many of us students, including myself were confused to a great extent by the content, but it did help give some skills in the long run. Near the end of the internship, I wish that we started the research projects earlier (like many of the other REUs we met and interacted with on the campus, who did not have an additional 4-week class and only 6 weeks of research) so that we could be working simultaneously as this course on the research. However, my senior capstone class this semester is run similar; we had two smaller research assignments the first half of the semester, and with 6 weeks left in the semester, I have the same timeline of research required, and I need to learn how to effectively learn skills in time management to still produce an equally great project product of research or better, while also balancing my other courses.

Advice

If anyone has the opportunity to do an REU, research-experience in the field of whatever one is interested in, I strongly do encourage it, as many people benefit from these, and for me, it gave me a confirmed focus this is the direction I want to go for my career, which was changed slightly from what I originally thought coming into undergraduate school classes of CMU.

Variety of job tasks, physical work paired with shifts that did not require much movement, great boss.

What I wish was different

Often, tasks for the day were changed 20 minutes before work began in the morning. It would have been nice to have more advance warning.

Advice

It's definitely worth it to take a job that is not mentally demanding during the summer. It gives you time to process ideas, and think about life, while still being productive.

What I liked

I liked the research aspect. The work was in an environmental engineering lab so I also felt like I was making a positive difference in the world.

What I wish was different

As an engineer I wish the financial compensation had been a bit higher. I had friends working in warehouses or assembly lines making over 15 an hour.

Advice

Take very good notes when learning things. Make daily journals of what you did and how you did it. This will pay off when in the future you need to do similar tasks.

Ability to work anywhere there is internet connection. I enjoyed my responsibilites which included but are not limited to: • Screen and market technologies and business concepts for potential commercial use. Evaluate the commercialization potential of business concepts originating from the Oregon State University community • Research intellectual property landscape and potential patentability of new technologies or business concepts ideas. Summarize findings and communicate with Faculty, Staff, and Mentors on a variety of projects • Create a more detailed financial analysis and business plan for concepts that show promise for commercialization

What I wish was different

Nothing that comes to mind!

Advice

Don't be afraid to ask questions, and to take on more projects if you want more work. Seek clarification on topics of confusion. Sometimes work can be in industries or sectors that youve never heard of or know little about. Overall great learning experince and fun workign with different people and company owners.

A lot of experience in my field of Construction Management and also got to work with many contractors from around the area. I was also exposed to all types of work from remodeling, new build, roofing, mechanical facilities, etc.

What I wish was different

I wish that I could have spent more time with the Contractors instead of being on the owner side of the operations.

Advice

To get out of the office as much as possible. Don't waste your time looking for things to do. Go out into the field and just familiarize yourself with the worksite, the contractors, and the working being done.

I really enjoyed learning a lot about field research and data analysis. I was able to work with a great group of people and was in a kayak every other day.

What I wish was different

I wish that there had been more housing available at the Port Orford Field Station as I had to share a room with two other girls for 6 weeks.

Try new things, I had never done research before and have learned so much during my internship that I will use in my future career.

This experience has developed my interpersonal skills and I applied for it because I wanted to experience something other than my regular school year position. So, people out there, always challenge yourselves with a new situation and get out of your comfort zone cause that is how you grow!

Undergraduate Researcher

What I liked

I love the community that formed. There was coffee and donuts every Wednesday morning that allowed people from different departments and organizations to get to know each other. The REU's, Summer Scholars, grad students, and summer session students were able to live minutes away by walking. There was a weekly seminar that was very informative. Planned activities, such as Wilderness First Aid and the camping trip were equal parts educational and fun.

What I wish was different

I wish transportation had been better. There was a van available for grocery runs and such, but it wasn't acceptable to take that out to dinner and since most people didn't have cars it was hard to get around for fun activities not related to the program.

Advice

It was an experience I know I would not have been able to get anywhere else. There were students from all backgrounds, and all across the country so don't be afraid to go for it.
