Store Management Intern

May - August 2019 • Boca Raton, FL

What I liked

I liked the company culture, and I felt they had a good internship program. I was exposed to both the store and corporate environments. I also liked the case study project, it was cool to come up with an idea to help the company and compete against the other interns.

What I wish was different

I did find it difficult at times to communicate with my group for the innovation case study project because I was the only one at a store. The rest of the group were based at the corporate office.

Advice

Take advantage of the networking opportunities because you meet a lot of people in many different positions.

Cashier

July - September 2019 • Dallas, TX

What I liked

I liked the environment. The people I worked with never caused me problems. I also liked getting to interact with different people everyday. I also liked that we had daily goals to accomplish and if we did, we'd be input into a box that is pulled from each month to get an amazon gift card or extra money.

What I wish was different

I don't think there's much that I would change. Standing around for long periods of time can be boring and exhausting especially when there's a slow day but as a cashier, that's expected, so I always loved being on the sales floor doing other things like restocking whenever I had a chance.

Advice

The biggest thing would be if you're not good with people and are quick to get angry, this may not be the job for you. There were many customers who weren't respectful and who felt very entitled or who didn't know the proper way to speak to people.

Sales Consultant

May - July 2019 • Tallahassee, FL

What I liked

I loved the scheduling and how often I worked. They were flexible with scheduling and it really worked with my schedule outside of work.

What I wish was different

Nothing really. The training was very helpful for me to understand how everything worked and what I needed to do to get things done. I thoroughly enjoyed working there and I am definitely returning in the spring of 2020.

Advice

The one piece of advice that I would share would be to take every correction or assignment as constructive criticism and take it with a smile. Honestly, that is what helped me get through the day at work. Having a smile makes other people happy and it makes the work day go by faster. Everyday was a learning experience and I improved as the days went on.

Sales Associate

May - July 2018 • Duluth, GA

What I liked

New experience in dealing with customers. It was my second job where I was a cashier, and third job overall, so I didn't have any expectations. I liked how organized the store was, friendly coworkers, and how much they pushed customer service as a top priority.

What I wish was different

I wish I was given a fair training session/ a few days, instead of being rushed into the hiring process. Sometimes, very aggressive customers would show up, and our managers wouldn't deal with them until they already started ranting and disturbing the peace. Also, it was very hard to convince customers to sign up for the rewards program. It didn't offer much in the first place, and a significant number of people only came 2 or 3 times a year, so unless they bought items of high value each time they visit, they wouldn't gain any noticeable discounts. Sometimes it felt like we were shorthanded for no good reason, where we would only have two cashiers for the entire store over a period of 5 hours, and lines would build up unintentionally.

Advice

It's better to go someplace else, build your sales experience, cashier experience, etc, and then apply here. It's rare for a completely new person to get the hang of getting people to sign up for their rewards program without adequate training.
