College Financial Representative

January - September 2019 • Grand Forks, ND

What I liked

Working at Northwestern Mutual was a great opportunity to meet other professionals and to learn about myself in a new way. I think it is equally important to learn about what you do not like as to learn about what you enjoy, and Northwestern Mutual taught me that I do not like making commission or having to cold call people.

What I wish was different

I wish that, going into the internship, I would've been more aware of the time commitments and how difficult the work would be. Being more educated about it may have prepared me more for the commitment.

Advice

I would definitely advise people to take their time before committing to this, because it is a lot of hard work and dedication but there is a large reward.

What I liked

Northwestern Mutual is a great company with a fantastic culture. Not only did I love going to work everyday, but enjoyed the people I worked with and the opportunities they gave me.

What I wish was different

I lived in Pella this summer, which was about an hour commute to Des Moines to our office. I would have rather lived in Des Moines for convenience sake!

Advice

In this internship, you reap what you sow. This internship can be fantastic and it is all based on the amount of work you put into it. Before starting, hone in on your communication skills.

What I liked

There was a lot of independence. I got to work almost completely on my own and get a true, hands on experience.

What I wish was different

More assistance. My office was very quiet and filled with older reps so they were not around much.

Advice

Go all in on it. If you get the opportunity it is definitely worth it if you work hard. It is frustrating at times, but stick with it.

What I liked

The Latham office of the Tronco network offers an amazing leadership team which provides unconditional support. The freedom of scheduling and self-determined work ethic made this experience the more enjoyable than any of my previous positions.
