Northrop Grumman Corporation

Software Engineer Intern

June - September 2019 • Herndon, VA

What I liked

Being a big corporation, there are plenty of opportunities to get involved with and great, experience people to work with.

What I wish was different

More work to do. Lots of days were left without much tasking or direction

Advice

Try to get a position that requires a clearance. With government contracting, a clearance opens up more opportunities.

Supplier Manufacturing Engineering Intern

May - August 2019 • Palmdale, CA

What I liked

The pay.

What I wish was different

I wish they had prepared for me. It was like they had no idea I was coming. They had almost nothing for me to do. I didn’t solve any remotely important problems for them. I didn’t have any significant assignments. They did not provide me with an educational internship experience.

Advice

Talk to people who have interned at the company you are interested in. If you get an internship, ask them as many questions as you can before you get there. Make sure to meet or talk to your manager before you show up, and tell them you want something meaningful to do while you’re there.

Mechanical Engineering Intern

May - August 2019 • Bethpage, NY

What I liked

The engineers within the section I worked in were phenomenal. It's an amazing thing being surrounded by incredibly intelligent individuals that share similar passions.

What I wish was different

Advice

Do not only expect your immediate supervisor to give you tasks. Do not be afraid to reach out and find work. Make the most of your time and don't be afraid to talk with the various engineers you'll encounter. The internship will be exactly what you make of it.

Cost Estimating Intern

June - August 2019 • Elkton, MD

What I liked

The company was fantastic and the defense industry is fascinating. I was lucky to have a great team that assisted me with my hands-on work. The cost estimating was a different side of finance than students are typically exposed to at JWU, which provided a learning experience. My manager was consistently challenging me, always fair, and she wanted nothing but the best for me. On top of all of this, the pay rate was great!

What I wish was different

I cannot stress how fortunate I am for having this internship, I would not have wanted it any other way.

Advice

Students should work their hardest and apply to as many jobs or internships as they can. Not only is the process very competitive in Finance, but often grueling. Do not let the process discourage you because if you put in the time and the effort, it will always work out for the best. The staff at JWU do their best to bring in great opportunities, but sometimes students need to reach further and to employers that may not have been initially considered.

Engineering Intern

What I liked

I enjoyed the environment and the opportunities present within the company. My mentors and coworkers were all very friendly and helpful as well. I was able to participate in meaningful work and learn new skills during my internship.

What I wish was different

I wished that I had worked in a different department, but I ended discovering which fields I wanted to explore, and they gave me the opportunity to work in those departments next year when I return.

Advice

I would say to make the most of your time at your internship. Even if you aren’t working on the most exciting work, try to learn as much as you can and be proactive

What I liked

Doing a co-op for a company like Northrop allows them to train you more than an internship. You get more diversity in your experience because after you've been through the typical internship experience you have 3-4 more months to build on that.

What I wish was different

The company was going through its first major hiring since becoming Northrop Grumman IS, formerly Orbital ATK. There was a lot of minor inconveniences associated with that transition as the HR, IT and hiring staff were going through that system for the fist time as well.

Advice

Take an opportunity at a co-op if given to you. I believe it was much more useful than a summer internship, and Northrop was a great place to get that experience.

Global Supply Chain Intern

June - August 2019 • Redondo Beach, CA

What I liked

In my internship I was given a lot of freedom to learn about the things within my department that most interested me, and to work on projects that I felt were important. I liked having the independence to choose my own work and not always needing to check in with someone. I was able to learn a broad variety of skills because of the freedom I was given to work with everyone on the team at different points.

What I wish was different

I wish I had more opportunity to connect and work with other interns in my field. There was only one other intern in my department, and we chatted sometimes but our work was always different. The company hosted a lot of events for interns to mingle and connect, however I wanted to connect more at work rather than outside of work. While I loved the freedom of my role, it would have been valuable to work with other interns on an ongoing project or goal potentially.

Advice

Go into the experience with an open mind. No matter what role you are in for an internship, there is always so much to learn and explore. Everyone in the company is very friendly and most people have open-door policies. I gained so much just from emailing managers in other departments and having meetings with them to learn more about the company and where I best fit. So much room for growth and leadership.
