Hours worked with my schedule and good pay. Worked with great people and work wasn't too hard.
What I wish was different
Lots of standing in moving and sometimes had to work mandatory overtime.
Advice
I would not suggest taking 2 summer classes on top of this job. I tried juggling all these things and was successful at it, however it took away from my leisure time and I got extremely burnt out by the end of the summer. This is a good job if you want a lot of hours with good pay. This is a great seasonal position for any college student!

Sales Associate
May - August 2019 • Del Mar, CA
What I liked
I really enjoyed the community you build within the store. In addition, the experience is great especially as a first job. Retail is hard work, but its great experience to see if you want to work in that type of industry in the future.
What I wish was different
I wish they would not have stressed making your sales goal so much for new hires. As this was my first real job, I found myself REALLY stressing over trying to make my number in order to make commision. In reality, it should not be about hitting a number; rather, it should be about helping the customer.
Advice
Make sure you realize that you can not please everyone. As long as you are respectful to your coworkers and managers and try your absolute best, this job is great!

Retail Salesperson
May - August 2019 • Palo Alto, CA
What I liked
I loved learning how to communicate with all different types of people and getting to know my costumers and coworkers while doing it.
What I wish was different
I wish that it was more of a work-family environment where we would all hang outside of work. Also, if my coworkers (who have worked there for almost 10 years) would have tried harder to keep the floor clean!
Advice
You don't know what someone is going through so try not to give them such a hard time for being mean.

Retail Sales Associate
June - August 2019 • San Mateo, CA
What I liked
I loved learning about different fashion marketing, learning how retail works, the values of the company, and helping all kinds of customers find what they loved.
What I wish was different
I wish the company had been a little more helpful in assisting me finding the same job in Southern California as I really loved working there.
Advice
Try to learn a lot more of the product than just your department, it will be impressive to customers and superiors. Be a team player, Nordstrom is very respectful of that.

Customer Service Experience
May - July 2019 • Stanford, CA
What I liked
I learned a lot about customer service and how to deal with all kinds of people. Everyone I worked with was very friendly and I really enjoyed working with them.
What I wish was different
I wish I could have been paid more based on the odd hours I was given/flexibility I was expected to have. Especially since there were times that I was filling in as a sales person but was not getting commission.
Advice
I think everyone should work in at least one customer experience job because it really helps improve your ability to interact with others, especially in a professional way!

Sales Associate
June - August 2019 • Irvine, CA
What I liked
I liked working on a draw-commission structure where we would receive commission if it surpassed our hourly earnings. This was a great incentive but I also enjoyed working in an environment where your coworkers feel like your friends.
What I wish was different
I don't wish anything was different.
Advice
I would advise any people who want to work at Nordstrom that it can be difficult if you struggle with interpersonal communications and multitasking. At the surface, it looks like a simple job but it's a lot of work which makes it more rewarding and teaches you a lot about being in a fast-paced, customer-oriented environment.

Sales Associate
June - September 2019 • Palo Alto, CA
What I liked
Pay is commission-based! During the summer there's a huge sale, which means more opportunities for sales.
It is very customer service orientated, which is fun and engaging if you like talking to people.
20% discount on Nordstrom and Nordstrom Rack. It is also fast-paced, competitive, and goal-oriented.
What I wish was different
A lot of people return clothes, which takes a hit to your commission.
Advice
Don't be so competitive that you ruin relationships with coworkers.

Apparel Salesperson
June - August 2019 • Cincinnati, OH
What I liked
I liked having the opportunity to enhance my customer service skills. It was also an opportunity to get comfortable speaking and engaging with strangers on a daily basis. It gave me the opportunity to learn how to sell myself because it was also a commission job
What I wish was different
I wish I had a different manager. My culture of the job was centered around competitiveness for sales so I wasn’t engaged with my coworkers.
Advice
Working in retail is not easy, but don’t be ashamed to get this experience. I felt bad about not having an internship geared toward my major, but I realize now how much this job helped my communication skills.

Sales Associate
June - August 2019 • Farmington, CT
What I liked
It was commission based pay, which worked really well for me because I’m a hard worker and very good at sales. It was the most professional environment I’ve ever worked in. The competition was entertaining too. I was one of the top sellers in the department.
What I wish was different
I wish I’d gotten to work there during the school year. I had an offer from the local Nordstrom, and they said I didn’t even have to be interviewed, but I would’ve had to work full time, which is too much for me.
Advice
Only work at a commission based job if you’re confident in your sales ability and social skills! I had a friend who really struggled with the job because he wasn’t as good at the sales portion as I was. The personalities of the top sellers stood out much more clearly than the lower sellers.

Apparel Salesperson
June - August 2019 • Cedar Rapids, IA
What I liked
I loved the environment created by the people involved. The atmosphere was friendly, inviting, hard-working, and there was a lot of neat apparel!
What I wish was different
The job was more or less enjoyable; management was always either strict or laid back so finding the rhythm when things start picking up was probably the most difficult part.
Advice
Be on time, pay attention during training, and have fun.
