I greatly benefitted from the opportunity to work with a diverse team of researchers to complete research using remote sensing relevant to information needed by decision makers at National Parks.

Project Lead
June - August 2020 • Huntsville, AL
What I liked
I loved collaborating on a team to create products using NASA Earth Observations to address environmental problems within Huntsville.
What I wish was different
Our term was virtual which was not bad, but I wish we could have been in person!
Advice
Always believe in yourself and your capabilities! Don't focus too much on comparing yourself to others who may have more experience than you.

What I liked
Participants have a lot of control over the direction of their projects which I think is a valuable skill to get as an undergrad. I also like that the program focuses on creating products with an end-user in mind instead of just research for research's sake.
What I wish was different
Advice
Apply for the program! It's a really valuable way to combine technical and research skills with the needs of real-world partner organizations.

Earth Sciences Researcher

What I liked
I enjoyed the personal focus on my project and the scope of the project as well as the hard deadlines which forced me to be quick on my feet and encouraged quick learning while building valuable science communication skills.
What I wish was different
I wish that the program had communicated the scope of the project and given us more background info on the project. I learned quickly but would have benefited from some higher knowledge of remote sensing techniques before arriving as well as knowing how valuable the coding aspect of the project was going to be.
Advice
I would highly recommend this program to anyone interested in remote sensing opportunities and wanting to bolster their research and communication skills.

NASA DEVELOP Team Member
June 2019 • Pocatello, ID
What I liked
I got to work on things I did in my undergrad that led to a full time position with NASA. I get to work on meaningful projects for national decision makers doing what I am passionate about and am developing technical, professional, and communication skills that I never would have gained elsewhere so quickly.
What I wish was different
I would have liked to see more outreach for this program. I was fortunate enough to get into this national program and move into a full time position but many people don't know it exists. I have been performing outreach to fix this issue and hopefully see more people in my team next year!
Advice
There is something for everyone in a field you're passionate about, you may just have to dig to find it! Expand your network to everyone you can and never count anyone out as a possible connection to a great job in the future. While what you know is extremely important for success in your field, the old mantra never changes, its not what you know, its who you know.

I wish it was more hands on with field work.
Advice
If you want to go into the computer side/ GIS side of Environmental Science this job would be for you.

What I liked
The best thing about NASA DEVELOP is the opportunity to apply what you have learned in the classroom to solve real-world problems which have actual consequences. I got to work in a highly collaborative environment on a meaningful project with great project partners and advisors.
What I wish was different
I wish that the number of required deliverables would have been reduced. I consistently had to work overtime in order to produce work which met required standards and deadlines.
Advice
If you are looking for a unique internship which will grow your professional network and give you applied experience working in the Earth sciences with remote sensing and GIS, this internship is for you. The pace can be a bit fast at times, but if you are willing to ask questions, communicate, and work hard you can come away with a fantastic experience and new friends.
