Homeless Resource Intern
June - August 2018 • Los Angeles, CA
What I liked
I enjoyed being able to make a positive impact on the Homeless community in LA and provide them with the proper resources to better themselves and their family. The work was tedious but I enjoyed every second because I knew it would change someone else's life for the better. Hearing the stories and seeing how they lived motivated me to find the best resources I could in a short amount of time, so they could have shelter, receive a proper dinner, or even a job that will hire them.

What I wish was different
I wouldn't change a thing. If anything, I wish I had started years ago.
Advice
Get in early! Talk to your favorite TA's and professors about RA opportunities. Most labs are always looking for undergraduate RA's and it helps you decide what you want to do with the rest of your life.

Volunteer
August 2017 • Price, UT
What I liked
This was volunteer work for a local recycling organization, so it wasn't for any actual company or major nonprofit organization, such as United Way or the Sierra Club. I'm still with the Green Team, and helping them out here and there with event planning, and other logistical operations. What I like about this organization is how tight-knit and Community oriented it is.
What I wish was different
Could be better organized, as there can be some friction between the board members.

Nanny
June - August 2018 • Flagstaff, AZ
What I liked
I loved working with the same two children everyday and seeing them grow. Childcare is an excellent way to find work that puts the safety, importance, and wellbeing of others before yourself. It allows you to enter into a selfless mindset and truly give you insight into the daily lives of many working adults that are also parents. Parenting is a full time job in itself and being a nanny gave me just a glimpse of the love and effort that Mom's and Dad's have to give to their children every passing day. It was a very meaningful and useful experience.
What I wish was different
I wish that I could've continued to nanny for them throughout the school year, but I had to move back to Tucson for school!
Advice
Kids can be very overwhelming and a true test of your patience and limits. Instead of allowing yourself to get easily flustered, try to put yourself into the mindset of a child. They are so inquisitive and naive, their emotions get the best of them most often. Understand that nothing is personal and that they are learning and growing every day just as you did. Providing them with loving, caring patience will be much more effective than an attitude of annoyance or anger.

Volunteering teaching English
May - August 2018 • Cholula, Puebla
What I liked
I loved working with my students; they were always eager to learn, very insightful, and really motivated me to learn more about the English language and methodologies for TESOL.
What I wish was different
I wish I would have had more reliable transportation.
Advice
I would highly recommend that anyone who study abroad participate in a similar experience. You learn so much about both your language and your students' languages by teaching English. Plus, I made many friends I would not have had the chance to make if I hadn't taught.

I loved being able to work very closely with community members and being able to learn more about the Geechee way of life.
What I wish was different
Nothing, everything happened as it was supposed to I felt. I learned a lot and was able to grow immensely.
Advice
Serving a community to me means to be flexible and help out in a capacity that you didn't anticipate, especially in a location where the number of helping hands really matters.
