What I liked

I loved the community that was formed of all the interns- it was clear that their internship program was well established and aimed to provide us with a bounty of resources and time to ramp up.

What I wish was different

I wish it were longer than 12 weeks. I wish UVA offered co-op programs.

Advice

Say yes to everything. Learn something, and try new things. Don't be afraid to ask questions.

Talk to as many people as you can when you take on a job. They will be willing to chat and will give you a lot of insight on life at the company or other potential roles.

I wish my team was a lot younger for better relationships outside the job.

Just be in touch with your manager every step of the way to make sure you are on the same page about the nature of what needs to be delivered that way you can pivot if you have to before it is too late.

I liked that my work was all new and kept me busy. My mentor was very attentive. There were many events for interns to connect and learn.

What I wish was different

I wish I took more time to look into other teams and the Seattle area.

Do not feel overwhelmed by the amount of things to do. Focus on what is important and what you enjoy. Your team wants you to succeed.

I got to focus on a lot of real big problems, working with large datasets and getting to experiment with lots of different technologies.

More group projects between interns would have helped the experience.

I loved the environment and the people. Everyone was very helpful and really helped me to learn and grow as a person. I met so many people from all over the world that are gonna be my friends for life.

Remond/Bellevue is more fun. More night life. If I want night life I have to drive to Seattle

What I liked

My project was extremely fun and interesting! Everyone in my team was very patient and always willing to answer my questions. My peers were amazing and it was really fun working with them! We also had a lot of fun participating in the intern events Microsoft organized throughout the summer.

What I wish was different

Advice

For the application process: Apply early! By October a lot of people have already received their interview results or are almost done with the process. Also be honest in your interviews, I feel your personality is as important (or maybe more) as your skills. For the actual internship: Get out of your comfort zone! Talk to as many people as possible and try new things, use this opportunity to learn about different positions and teams.

I enjoyed the flexibility of my schedule and the work that I did. With the Explore program, you work in groups or "pods" of 3. My podmates were great and I loved the socialization aspect of the internship.
