Deli Clerk

July 2017 - August 2018 • Lake Orion, MI

What I liked

My coworkers were nice.

What I wish was different

This job was horrible. I spent all day slicing meats for customers. Often I did not get all of the breaks I was supposed to because we were so busy and I can't just walk away when there are customers waiting. Sometimes customers would ask for shaved meat. This means that the meat needs to be sliced like sawdust. Shaving meat is exhausting to one's arm. Later in the day we were supposed to do all of the required cleaning before closing while simultaneously serving customers. (Although, later in the day there were less customers.) Often we did not finish all of the cleaning we were supposed to, or else we stayed 15 to 45 minutes past the end of our shifts to make sure it got done.

Advice

Don't get a job in a deli.

What I liked

It is a really good company, and the job was challenging but fun. It is a really summer job to make money for college.

What I wish was different

Nothing really. It is a good starting out job as well as a summer job

Advice

Make sure to work during the summer. Have fun as well. But make money in the summer so when you are in school, you can focus more on school than work.

Cashier

June 2018 • Warren, MI

What I liked

I really enjoyed working with new customers everyday and being a strong member of the company. I tried to make sure I followed the values of the company; acknowledge, assist, and appreciate. The speed of the store was moderate and we always had help in multiple areas (on the registers, bagging, ready management).

What I wish was different

I wish there would have been more opportunities for me to work over-time.

Advice

I would say be open to everyone. You learn a little bit of everything from every body. In some cases, I had customers who were going through things at home and in my line, I was able to help them get a smile on their face for the day. Whether it was helping them save money by an additional coupon, picking fresh produce they liked or anything of that sort; I loved helping people.
